Vitamin D

To say that Vitamin D protects a number of important functions in the body is a bit of an understatement. This fat-soluble vitamin many of you have heard of, is actually a steroid hormone that controls the expression of over 1,000 genes in the body. This means that vitamin D is controlling over 1,000 different physiological processes!

In addition to supporting healthy bones and muscles, it supports cardiovascular health and immune function. Although direct sunlight provides a small amount of natural vitamin D, many individuals do not get enough vitamin D from sunlight and their diet. Vitamin D supplementation can be of great benefit in these situations.

We always recommend getting your serum levels checked with a simple blood test. Meta-analyses of studies done ranging from 1966-2013 have shown that people with serum levels between 40-60 ng/ml have the lowest all-cause mortality, meaning they die less of all non-accidental diseases.

Here’s a great Q & A with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, who has done a LOT of research on Vitamin D and its importance. Check out her infographic below as well.
