Hydration

Hydration is a key element every athlete must be aware of, especially here in Florida. WHAT you hydrate with is crucial. Fueling during and around exercise times requires more than replenishing calories and fluids; it involves consistent and adequate electrolyte support as well.

Electrolytes are analogous to the motor oil in your car— they don’t make the engine run, but they’re absolutely necessary to keep everything running smoothly. Proper functioning of the digestive, nervous, cardiac, and muscular systems depends on adequate electrolyte levels.

Dehydration has several negative impacts on athletic performance, and perhaps you’ve even experienced extreme consequences, such as muscle cramps and fatigue. It’s important to note that as little as 2% dehydration can result in a decrease in performance! And it can leave you feeling sluggish and tired throughout the day.

At CrossFit Winter Park, we recommend using Catalyte by Thorne Research. Catalyte combines electrolytes with B vitamins, vitamin C, and D-ribose (which helps slow lactic acid build-up and stimulates energy recovery) for broad-spectrum repletion of nutrients and hydration of cells. Catalyte is formulated with sodium in the ratio that is typically found in sweat. Its blend of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc replaces the primary electrolytes lost in perspiration, while also helping to repair and rebuild muscle tissue.
